One of the biggest concerns we constantly hear from young people considering an accounting career is that AI will eliminate entry-level roles.
It’s a fair question. AI is already automating many routine compliance and administrative tasks that have traditionally formed part of early career experience.
But this doesn’t mean there won’t be opportunities. It means the nature of those opportunities is changing.
Instead of spending countless hours on repetitive data processing, tomorrow’s accountants will develop skills in:
- Client communication and relationship management
- Critical thinking and professional judgement
- Business analysis and problem-solving
- Strategic and commercial advice
- Using AI to deliver greater value to clients
AI is a powerful tool, but it isn’t always right. It can make mistakes, miss context, and cannot replace ethical judgement, professional scepticism, or trusted client relationships.
The accounting profession has always evolved alongside technology. AI is simply the next stage of that evolution.
The challenge for the profession is to ensure we continue to provide meaningful pathways for graduates while equipping them with the skills needed for an AI-enabled future.
AI won’t replace great accountants. It will enable great accountants to deliver even greater value.
