The accounting profession has suffered from outdated perceptions for a very long time, including that accounting careers are linear.
For too long, students and graduates have been shown a narrow picture: study accounting, enter a firm, progress step-by-step, and eventually become a partner. While that path still exists, it is no longer the only path, and in many cases, it’s not even the most common one.
Instead, accounting careers can shift in many directions, for example:
- moving between audit, tax, advisory, or consulting
- stepping into industry roles (like finance manager or CFO)
- taking breaks, studying further, or switching into specialisations such as ESG and technology
- moving into executive pathways like Managing Director or Chief Executive
- building your own business through entrepreneurship, launching startups, or becoming a founder in a completely new industry
Accounting is not a narrow technical destination, it is a launchpad into business, leadership, and problem-solving at scale.
The Make Accounting Great Again campaign exists to reshape perceptions like this. We want students and young professionals to see accounting not as a rigid ladder, but as a flexible career platform that opens doors rather than closing them.
