Accounting Set to Be Included in the NSW Years 11 and 12 School Curriculum

To make accounting more appealing to high school students, the New South Wales government is making a bold move to highlight accounting as a fundamental part of business education in its draft syllabus for Years 11 and 12.

The draft syllabus aims to showcase accounting as a viable and rewarding career pathway, giving students exposure to real-world business decision-making, financial analysis, and essential accounting concepts such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.

We strongly support this initiative. Our founder and global spokesperson, Chartered Accountant Joe Kaleb, says: “getting young people interested in accounting while they’re still in high school is crucial for building the next generation of skilled accountants. By connecting classroom learning to career opportunities and showing how accounting skills are transferable across audit, tax, finance, and business roles, we can make accounting not just relevant but exciting. Early exposure empowers students to see accounting as a dynamic career choice with global opportunities.”

We see this as the perfect opportunity to get involved as our global campaign is specifically aimed at attracting high school students to study accounting and pursue a career in this amazing and very important profession.

For example, we could collaborate with schools and the accounting community to deliver guest talks, interactive workshops, and mentorship programs, showing students the real-world relevance of accounting and the exciting career paths it offers.

💡 Making Accounting Visible and Fun!

Imagine high school students walking the halls, proudly sporting the iconic ‘Make Accounting Great Again’ blue caps. Bold, fun, and instantly recognisable, these caps are a creative way to spark curiosity, start conversations, and show that accounting is an approachable and exciting career.

Last year, we took our campaign to Sydney Grammar School, giving students a firsthand look into the world of accounting and the wide range of exciting, diverse, and rewarding career opportunities it offers.

The students immediately connected with our slogan, and the caps were snapped up in no time. It was a fantastic way to make accounting relatable and memorable for the next generation.

Having students wear these caps in high schools across the country will significantly raise the profile of the profession.
